During October, the K5 classes study Mexico and other Hispanic countries. We study the culture, people, architecture, and art. We discuss the people in these countries and try to approach the activities from a missions viewpoint. We talk about how we can help other people in other countries and reach out to our neighbors in the world. In future years, I would like to actually make contact with a missionary and send pictures and money to show our support. To finish our study, we celebrate by dressing up as a Hispanic or Mexican boy or girl. We speak Spanish as much as we can that day and during the month of October. In my class, I have three students that speak Spanish at home. Two are from Venezuela and one is from Mexico. We make a piñata, maracas, and mosaic art. We also eat authentic Mexican or Hispanic food on our Fiesta day, usually the last school day of October. –by Mrs. Barber

Here is what some K5 students had to say about their Fiesta Day:

“I whacked the Piñata”—Jeremiah Goodwin

Timothy Blackstad liked the “…food, piñata, and candy.”

Melanie Graziano commented, “My favorite thing I got to do was to break the piñata.”

“We all got to hit the piñata, and Chelsea is my best friend, and she is funny,” says Hailey Koory.

Sarah Kirk said, “I got to play with the toys Mrs. Barber gave us.”

When asked what he liked best about the Fiesta, one little boy, who requested to remain anonymous, stated, “I like spaghetti.”
