On Thursday, September 30th, Mr. Cap's U.S. History class took
a field trip to Gilcrease Art Museum. The historical museum,
founded by philanthropist Thomas Gilcrease, has a variety
of art and effectively displays the many eras of culture of
Oklahoma. Frederic Remington, Thomas Moran, and George Catlin
are just a few among the many artists that have works displayed
in the museum.
The exhibits that were shown explored Native American art,
depicting the various aspects of Native American life and
civilization. Each painting was distinct in its interpretation
of Oklahoma's past culture. The students enjoyed a one-hour
tour given by the museum tour guides that enabled them to
examine each piece of artwork, which in turn gave them a deeper
understanding of this state's cultural heritage. They also
got an opportunity to take a first-hand look at the various
artists' styles and depth.
After the museum tours, the students enjoyed fine Italian
dining at the local Zio's restaurant. Delicious food, a warm
atmosphere, and friends made lunch a major highlight of the
trip. After lunch, the tenth grade class headed back to school,
having received a newfound appreciation and respect for Oklahoma's
artistic legacy. by Melissa Koshy
