Over the course of a week, during various class periods, Grace students put away their schoolbooks and learned, hands-on, a little something about world culture. They dressed up in foreign garments, played cultural games, and designed an Italian city for the Homecoming set background. The title of the 2005 Homecoming ceremony was "Una Serata a Venezia," which translates, "An Evening in Venice" in Italian. In several pep assemblies, students participated in class events, basketball games, and the Homecoming Court ceremony.

The 2005 Homecoming games' theme, "A Trip Around the World," prompted days such as Africa day, Central America day, and Europe day. Students played cultural games including gondola racing, mummy wrapping, and mustache drawing, as well as classic games including tug of war, capture the flag, and "Ships and Sailors." Each class received points for its performance in the games. The results of the classes' scores were as follows: High School 1st place: Seniors (324 points); 2nd place: Juniors (268 points); 3rd place: Freshmen (208 points); and 4th place: Sophomores (194 points). Junior High 1st place: 6th grade (291 points); 2nd place: 8th grade (281 points); and 3rd place: 7th grade (244 points).

These competitions hyped the students for Grace's Homecoming, which consisted of basketball games-alumni vs. students on Thursday night, followed by regular school games on Friday night--and a homecoming court ceremony. Students, parents, and alumni attended the homecoming basketball games against Mingo Valley. They boys played first, and won, 54 to 38. During (homecoming 2005 continued. . .)half time of the boy's game, the alumni had a free throw contest. After the boy's outstanding win, Grace held the Homecoming court ceremony.

Mr. Cap, who emceed the event, began his dramatic narration by telling the audience, "Imagine an evening in Venice - with the sounds of the water gently lapping against the sides of the gondola, as the gondolier propels the boat through a watery maze that is called.Venice, the most romantic city in the world." Student Council spent two weeks planning this unique Italian set. With some help from Night Magic, Inc. they built buildings, a boat, a bridge, and softly lit the setting. After Mr. Cap opened the ceremonies, he read each court member's bio as he or she walked up on stage. Elegantly proceeding amidst the audience, each couple walked down the auditorium aisle, moved up the stage, and stood on the little Italian bridge as their bio was read. All were beautifully attired in the most formal of dresses and tuxedos, complete with coiffed hair and sparkling jewelry. The attendants were: Seniors Kayla Alston, Christa Barber, Eliese Martinez, Jacob Briscoe, Anthony Harwell, and Drue Hutchinson; Juniors Christie Paulson, Ellen Tines, Lenny Fears, and Michael Howard; Sophomores Jubilee Adleta, Natalee Williams, Skip Lee and Creighton Piper; Freshmen Becki Hardy, Allison Harwell, Colby Cullum, and Philip Miller. Kindergarten attendants were Cora Duininck and Cole Wright.

After the bios were read, Dr. Stewart announced the king and queen: Christa Barber and Jacob Briscoe. The crowns were presented by former king and queen Josh Juarez and Angie King. Parents and friends took multiple pictures after the ceremony, and then took their seats to watch the girls' game. Although the girls didn't win, they played their hearts out and impressed their families and friends.

Overall, through class games, basketball games, and the Homecoming Ceremony, Grace's 2005 Homecoming built school and class unity, showed Grace's s school spirit for their basketball teams, and honored both returning alumni and students on the Homecoming court. According to student council secretary Michelle Jackson, "Homecoming night was magical." Story by Melissa Martinek
