Breathe, and suck the putrid air into
your prickling lungs. Listen, and hear the babies shrieking
from iron-bared cribs. Look, and control your reaction; for
here comes the little boy with a golf-ball-sized, black and
purple tumor on his left eye. Welcome to St. Francis Hospital.
Although aware of the grim and unsettling
environment, Mrs. Davis' Home Management class dared to bring
holiday cheer to this otherwise depressing atmosphere. Though
the machine's beeping and children's screaming troubled them,
the students decorated exquisitely. By the time they were
through, the four corridors of the seventh floor Pediatric
Wing glowed with Christmas spirit.
The whole decorating process took several
hours. The students hung massive waves of red and green paper
chains, lightly balancing paper candy canes on the chains.
They dangled winter-white snowflakes from the ceiling, and
with the help of sticky tack, attached cut-out Christmas lights,
bulbs, and ivy to every patient's door. The home management
class also brought homemade cookies and Christmas brownies
(with red and green sprinkles) for the nurses to munch. Though
they were pleased with the decorations, the nurses adored
their tasty Christmas snack. They thanked the class several
times, and even sent them a thank you card.
All who attended could mention the
one particular person who made the event special. She was
no older that six, with brown hair and plaid pajamas. When
she entered the hallway for the first time after the decorations
had been up, she smiled and announced to the world "It's Christmas!"
At that moment, Christmas officially began.
